About Bristol

Bristol is a city and unitary authority in England located on the River Avon. Bordered by Gloucestershire and Somerset it boasts one of the most populated cites in Southwest England. Also home to Bristol Cathedral that was founded in 1542, giving Bristol its city status and was originally the Abbey of St. Augustine built 400 years earlier. Bristol was also one of starting points for many early voyages exploring the new world and in 1497 Jon Gabot (Originally from Venice), became the first European to make land and set foot on mainland North America. Two years later in 1499 Bristol merchant William Weston was the first Englishman to lead an exploration to the same country.

In modern times, The Port of Bristol is now located at the Severn Estuary in Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Dock having moved from the city centre.

Bristol has been named the best city in Britain in which to live once in 2014 and again in 2017, and won the coveted European Green Capital Award in 2015.
